"The Train Ride in the Sky"
THE HOME OF THE PRIMITIVE TARAHUMARAS Few persons have visited this area of the Sierra Madre Occidental. One of the most beautiful, dramatic sites on the continent and the home of the primitive Tarahumara Indians. They live as they did hundreds of years ago in this remote area where their culture is virtually unchanged by contact with civilization. Here they continue to live amid some of the most scenic settings in North America... pure blue skies, sparkling clean air, forests, oak savannas, canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon of Arizona, a waterfall over one thousand feet high splashing in majestic isolated grandeur...this is their environment.

Have a question? For The Exceptionally Adventerous The small village of BATOPILAS, located 85 km (53 miles) South of Creel is only reached by an un-paved 2 lane (some of the time) road consisting of continuous curves, un-believable scenery and medium grades. The 5 hour trip is not for the "tender foot" nor is the hiking in the village, accomodations or eatery. BUT the scenery, history and quaintness are unsurpassed. .. seldom visited by tourist. From Creel - altitude 7,850 ft., there is in excess of a 6,000 ft. drop to the 1,600 ft. elevation of BATOPILAS located beside the river of the same name. Discovery of a vein of native silver in 1632 has taken BATOPILAS from disappointing to bonanza economic periods. From 1879 until his death in 1902, Alexander R. Shephard, ex- Governor of the District of Columbia built a mining dynasty. The shell of his mansion constructed by Italian masons remain standing. About 4 miles from the town is the "Lost Cathedral" which is known to be over 400 years old. It is not known who or why the Cathedral was built in such a remote location. It remains in use by the local population to this day. Frequently Asked Questions
